92nd Anniversary Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide and a Memorial Service for Slain Turkish-Armenian Journalist Hrant Dink to be Held in Times Square

Pre-Event: Armenian Genocide Experts and Survivors Available for Interviews

NEW YORK, March 5, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) (PRIMEZONE) -- On Sunday, April 22nd from 2-4 p.m., thousands of Armenian Americans and their supporters from N.Y., N.J., Conn., Pa., R.I., and Mass. will gather at Times Square to commemorate the 92nd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and to pay tribute to Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, who was recently slain in Turkey because he wrote about the Armenian Genocide. During the Armenian Genocide (1915-1923), 1.5 million Armenians were annihilated by the Ottoman Turkish Empire. "We Cannot Forget, We Will Not Forget" is the theme of the Commemoration. This event is free and open to the public.

Commemoration participants will include Armenian Genocide survivors and their families, historical, religious, political, humanitarian, cultural, educational and community leaders. Speakers include U. S. Representative Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, Manhattan District Attorney, Robert M. Morgenthau, grandson of Henry Morgenthau, former American Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire during WWI, and award-wining author Peter Balakian, Professor of Humanities and English at Colgate University, representing the PEN American Center.

The 92nd Commemoration is organized by Mid-Atlantic Knights and Daughters of Vartan (www.knightsofvartan.org), a U.S. fraternal organization of Armenian-Americans, and co-sponsored by Armenian General Benevolent Union (www.agbu.org ), Armenian Assembly of America (www.aaainc.org ), Armenian National Committee of America (www.anca.org), and Armenian-American Political Action Committee (www.armenpac.org ).

Sam Azadian, who lost four siblings during the Armenian Genocide, founded the first Times Square Commemoration in 1985. He, along with millions of Armenians and non-Armenians worldwide, believe that it critical for the Turkish government to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide. He states, "Two out of three Armenians perished as a result of forced deportation and mass murder by the Ottoman Turks."

Dr. Dennis Papazian, Founding Director of the Armenian Research Center of the University of Michigan, adds, "The events of the Armenian Genocide are well-documented in world history. The denial of the Armenian Genocide and absence of negative consequences for the Turks in the Ottoman Empire opened the door to all genocides in the 20th and 21st centuries, including the Holocaust, Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur. In fact, Hitler stated, "Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?" (online: www.armenian-genocide.org/hitler.html ).

On January 30, 2007, in the U.S., the Armenian Genocide Resolution (House Resolution 160) was introduced through the 110th Congress to reaffirm the Armenian Genocide. The Resolution states, "Calling upon the President to ensure that the foreign policy of the United States reflects appropriate understanding and sensitivity concerning issues related to human rights, ethnic cleansing, and genocide documented in the United States record relating to the Armenian Genocide, and for other purposes." Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.) and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) have championed U.S. reaffirmation efforts of the Armenian Genocide (online: www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=hr110-106 ).
