Caucasus: Azeri leader pledges not to agree to defeatist peace over Garabagh

"We will continue doing our best to resolve the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict in 2006. The provocative statements by certain political forces should not mislead the Azerbaijan people," President Ilham Aliyev told a meeting on the results of 2005 on Tuesday. The head of state described as unfounded the reports being circulated by the opposition that the decision had already been made with regard to the Garabagh issue.

"First of all, there is no decision. Second, where did they get this information from? What is the purpose of these lies? The position of Azerbaijan is intransigent. Let me say officially: Upper Garabagh will not be alienated from Azerbaijan – not now, not tomorrow, not in 10 or 100 years from now. As long as I am the president, will not sign such a document," the commander-in-chief said.

The president added that the negotiations were currently focused on Armenia vacating occupied territories and Azerbaijani refugees returning to their homes.
