Vanadzor, Armenia June 3-19, 2006
Habitat for Humanity
[...]
HFH Armenia was formed in March 2000. Habitat for Humanity has served Armenia well by offering people the opportunity to participate in this transition and serve their neighbors. Their big hearts and strategic leadership have encouraged a movement of goodwill. By recruiting an impressive number of local volunteers, the affiliate has been able to dedicate 124 homes so far, and Habitat has expanded to three regions in Armenia.
Join a team working on homes in the Lori region, about two hours from Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. We will be building primarily with concrete and "tufa," which is a volcanic stone indigenous to Armenia. Work will be decided according to the needs of the affiliate at the time of our arrival. It will range from moving stones for foundation, to painting rooms, to mixing cement, and so on.
[...]
Itinerary
The trip will take place June 3-19, including travel to and from Armenia, and will include seven to eight days of building, as well as four to five days of sightseeing and relaxation. There will be a healthy balance of hard work and cultural encounters with the people and places of Armenia.
Accommodations
We will be staying at a small hotel in Vanadzor and most meals will be provided. Water may be available for just a few hours a day. Breakfast will be eaten at the hotel, lunches at the build site, and dinners at various restaurants in town.
[...]
Cost
The work trip to Armenia costs $1,500, plus round-trip airfare. This price includes lodging, food, ground transportation, cultural tours, traveler's medical insurance, orientation materials and a donation to the local Habitat affiliate. Participants will need obtain a visa and to arrange and pay for transportation from their point of departure to Armenia. This should be done in consultation with the team leader. The team leader will refer team members to a travel agent who has arranged for discounted mission contract rates for the team. Team members wishing to use frequent flyer miles or travel independently may do so.
Team Leader
Cynthia Reimers Erickson is of Armenian descent, as well as German, and attributes her strong interest in and affection for Armenia to her Armenian grandmother. She has backpacked in Europe and traveled the former Soviet Union since the 1970s and has visited Armenia twice over the years. This will be her third Habitat Global Village trip and the second time she has led a team there. She looks forward to introducing team members to the beauty and wonders of Armenia, and is especially excited to be venturing to an area outside of the capital city.
