Jack Kachkar has agreed a deal to buy Marseille, a spokesman for the Canadian businessman said on Thursday evening.
Kachkar has offered €115million (£78million) to take over the Ligue 1 club and delivered financial guarantees to chief shareholder Robert Louis-Dreyfus.
Louis-Dreyfus bought the former European champions for just one franc 10 years ago, but a takeover of the club has long been mooted.
And Kachkar's statement means the next chapter in the often turbulent history of Marseille is now to be ushered in.
"Mr Jack Kachkar has signed with Mr Robert Louis-Dreyfus an agreement for the sale of Olympique Marseille," Kackhar's spokesman said in a statement.
"The transfer of the shares will become effective in the next few weeks."
