OLDENBURG, Germany -- Rising star Arthur Abraham makes the first defense of his IBF middleweight title when he meets Australian veteran Shannan Taylor on Saturday at EWE Arena.
A native of Armenia who now calls Berlin home, the 26-year-old Abraham (19-0, 17 KOs) has risen to claim the No. 3 ranking in the world and gained his first significant honor with a knockout of Kingsley Ikeke in December.
By beating Ikeke in five rounds, Abraham gained the vacant IBF crown and extended an impressive run of powerful wins. Only aging English star Howard Eastman and Canadian standout Ian Gardner have managed to go the distance with Abraham, both losing unanimously.
Abraham never has fought outside of Germany while Taylor (42-4-2, 28 KOs) has not been in action away from Australia since December 2001.
A loser to Shane Mosley in his only career title fight in March 2001, Taylor is ranked 43rd in the division after a loss to Dutch star Raymond Joval in November.
