Schroeder Presses Turkey to Bolster Democracy for EU (Update2)

Turkey ``must not slacken in its efforts,'' Schroeder said in a speech to Marmara University in Istanbul today, according to the e-mailed text. ``Reforms must be implemented and it must be ensured that they cannot be reversed.''

Schroeder today met with Greek Patriarch Bartholomeos, the leader of the Greek Orthodox Church, which has complained of curbs on its rights to own property in Turkey and the closure of a seminary in Istanbul used to train priests.

``Following this meeting I would like to encourage Turkey to tackle the need for reform in the area of religious freedom confirmed by the most recent EU-Turkey Association Council,'' Schroeder said.
